Sometimes we might have physically relocated to a new place but might be mentally in the same old comfort zone we created for ourselves at home. Living in a place is habit-forming. And breaking any habit is painful. So…how do you deal with homesickness?
1. Carry a little piece of home along!
Maybe it’s a small item, a blanket, a picture frame…bring something along that Will bring you comfort and, most importantly, make you feel at home.
2. Keep in touch with people back home.
Call and text your friends and family back home. Tell them how you feel. Now that everyone and everything happens over Zoom…Video call them! This will help massively in dealing with homesickness.
3. If it’s too difficult, seek help.
Sometimes things can be too much to bare. Head to a professional counsellor if you think you are finding it too difficult to adjust in the new surroundings. Talking about it and taking tips from a pro will surely help.
4. Find something that makes you happy other than work.
Not everything revolves around your work. Sometimes the worst thing to do when you are feeling homesick is staying home. Go out, meet people, find an activity to do like serving at a homeless shelter or pursue a new hobby! Keeping busy will help.
Homesickness is a very real anxiety issue, but it's not one that has to hold you back. Everyone gets through feeling homesick at their own pace, and it’s not a process you can rush.
Remember that it’s a very normal and completely understandable reaction to moving abroad, and that it’s okay to miss home once in a while.
